Celebration
Bollman Bridge Green Days
During the two days before the Thanksgiving break, Bollman Bridge hosts "Green Days". The entire school uses the environment for its focus in all academic arenas. Each grade watches student-created videos reminding all of the details of Terracycle and recycling in our building. The videos also stress the importance of reducing first, reusing second, and recycling only just before trash. Each grade also completes a science experiment, particular to their grade. They read environmental stories, particular to their grade and they reflect orally or in writing on their lessons. The students also watch videos from "Young Voices for the Planet", learning about student-inspired environmental actions around the world. It is a comprehensive and inspiring school-wide celebration organized by the Green Schools Leadership Team (a collection of students, staff members and parents who meet bi-weekly).

All-School announcements
SPEAK FOR RECYCLING!
A few ordinary Green Team members gave brief broadcasting over the intercom about recycling and helping our environment. Their "speeches" could improve our recycling efforts. Let's give a cheer for their hard work! The poems and speeches they gave I took to heart! Recycling can improve our green work. So please take their announcements to heart! -Iyore, 5th grade Students across the grade levels, from 2nd through 5th, consistently write their own announcements, then practice them working on presentation skills. Once their announcement is ready, the students earn a date and make their green announcement over the intercom for the entire school. The announcements do everything from teach about what to reduce, reuse and recycle, to celebrate green achievements to advertise green events. |

CELEBRATIONS IN THE ONLINE NEWSLETTER
In the weekly online newsletter, we celebrate many parts of the Bollman Bridge community. We frequently celebrate the activities and accomplishments concerning our environmental programs. We are also able to advertise and educate our community about our events, broadening the net of interest and involvement. |

WALK/BIKE to School Day
On April 23, 2014, Bollman Bridge will host its first annual Walk/Bike to School Day. Safe routes are mapped out with parents leading "walking school buses" from designated stops on the way to school (organized and announced in our email newsletter). The students will be rewarded with a "I Was Kind to the Earth Today!" sticker and the enjoyment of fresh air to start the day! |

WORM DAY!
Fearlessly led by Laura Fong, a home worm composter (also 2nd grade teacher at Bollman Bridge!), second grade prevails in both its love of worms and its knowledge about the kindness worms do for our earth. Each year, the students celebrate Worm Day with lessons and activities surrounding the beauty of the slimy creatures! As part of the science curriculum, second graders learn about how soil is made and why it is important to conserve soil. The second grade team decided it would be important for students to learn about composting as a part of this unit. They designed a day where students would learn about worms in a variety of ways and across different curricula. Students rotated from one classroom to another throughout the day to experience each activity. |

GREEN TEAM PRIDE
In the spring of 2013, one of the Green Team 4th graders decided to celebrate each of her green compatriots. She created and awarded certificates of environmental accomplishment to each of her peers. |

VALENTINES TO THE PLANET
A group of 4th graders organized "Valentines for the Planet". All of the Green Teams supported the idea and made it happen! Students made announcements, designed sample valentines, decorated a collection box, and encouraged students all over the school to use re-used and recycled objects to create valentines for the earth. The idea for the valentines was to tell the earth why they love and appreciate all that it is to us. The students of Bollman Bridge responded beautifully with around 150 valentines. They expressed beautiful environmental sentiments on a wide range of repurposed materials! We love you, earth! Happy Valentine's Day! |

RECYCLING COmpetition
In the fall of 2013, a staff member and a parent organized a recycling competition supported by the Environmental Protection Agency. Each grade had their recycling weighed weekly for one month. At the end of the month, the grade that kept the most recycled material out of the trash earned a prize. Congratulations, 4th grade! The analysis of the competition led our Green Teams to debate- is having a lot of recycling a solid ideal for our classrooms? What could be a higher goal? |
